Novi JV vs. Saline

(Saline, Michigan)   The Novi JV football team played its final game of the season against the Saline Hornets on a cold, rainy night in Saline.  The Wildcats won the coin toss and elected to receive.  Austin Racicot returned the kickoff to the 32 yard line and Novi drove downfield.  QB Isaac Burgess completed several passes to Racicot, and running backs Mark Ryan and Jeff Baker focused on the ground attack. Ryan drove in from the 2 yard line for the touchdown. Bryan Klosterman’s kick was good to make it 7-0 Novi.

Saline’s first possession ended quickly with a fumble recovered by Novi deep in Hornet territory. Burgess connected with Racicot from the 3 yard line for a second Novi touchdown.  Klosterman’s kick was blocked, leaving the score 13-0 Novi. Saline’s second possession was off to a slow start, with the kickoff receiver nailed at the 12 yard line by defensive lineman Ben Wright. After several short runs, the Hornet quarterback connected on a long touchdown pass. The kick was good to bring the score to 13-7.  Saline scored again on a 43-yard run just before the end of the first quarter.  The Hornet’s offense came alive in the second quarter, scoring on a long drive on the ground, then again on their next possession. Score at the half:  Saline 27, Novi 13.

Saline took the kickoff to start the second half, but the Hornets were shut down by Stevie Davis, Jalen Ward and the rest of the Novi defensive line. The Wildcat offense kept the ball on the ground, with Racicot and Ryan running for 9+ yards per carry. Novi was not able to punch the ball over the goal line, and turned over on downs.  Saline failed to move the ball offensively, but scored on an interception and the extra point was good to bring the score to 34-13. Saline scored again on a hook and ladder option, to make it 41-13.  Novi answered with a long passing drive downfield. Burgess spread the ball around, hitting Daniel Mellon for a 25 yard gain, Ward for +5, Billy Ulle for 20 yards and a TD pass to Jeff Baker. The kick was good, score 41-20.

Novi’s onside kick was recovered by the Wildcat Ali Taha. With the rain falling and the clock ticking down, Novi was unable to move past midfield, and turned over to Saline on downs.  The Hornets had similar luck, thanks in part to Keaton Figurski’s sack for -5. Saline’s field goal attempt was no good, and Novi took over for their final drive of the game.  Freshman Billy Ulle cranked a 36-yard run, followed by a 21-yard pass reception and another catch for +5. Burgess connected with Taha from the 10 yard line for the touchdown. Final score: Saline 41, Novi 26.

Thanks, guys for a great season. I’m sure you had as much fun playing as we did watching.
