JV defeats SL Lions, 20-7

By Chuck Wright
(Novi, Michigan)   The sixth game of the Novi JV football season started earlier than anticipated, and therefore the details of the first quarter are a bit sketchy.  We know that it was wet, and at the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats were leading the Lions of South Lyon 6-0.

The Wildcats defense began the second quarter with a sack of the Lions quarterback, and followed with a general shutdown of the South Lyon offensive drive.  The Novi offense exploded with an Austin Racicot run around the end for a first down.  Quarterback Isaac Burgess followed with a fake hand-off to Mark Ryan up the middle, then decided to keep the ball himself , 50 yards for a touchdown!  Klosterman’s kick was good to bring the score to 13-0.  The Lions possession was cut short by an interception by Novi defensive back Billy Ulle.  During the remainder of the second quarter, both teams struggled to move the ball effectively in the rain and mud.

The third quarter began with both teams showing difficulty passing the rain-slick football.  Novi turned to the ground game and Ryan charged for a 12 yard gain, dragging 3 Lion defensemen.  South Lyon was able to break a long run 72 yards for a touchdown. It would be their last.  The Novi defense was strong with a sack by Patrick Wojtylo, and another by Jalen Ward and a host of teammates. Highlights came in the fourth quarter, on the Wildcat’s final scoring drive.  Burgess completed to Racicot for a 30 yard gain. Two plays later, Racicot carried for +14. In sight of the end zone, Ryan hit a massive hole opened up by the left side of the O-line (Stevie Davis, Marshall Sayles and Jon Sohn) and bulldozed through the remains of the Lion defense to score another 6. The Kick was good to bring the score to Novi 20, South Lyon 7. On the final series, Novi moved the ball decisively, but ran out of time to score again.  Final Score 20-7.
