Freshman Tie Rocks, 20-20

The Wildcat Freshman team fought to a tie with the Salem Rocks on Thursday afternoon.

The Wildcats started off on top scoring in the first quarter.  The scoring drive started with an interception by Rob Deighton and was capped off with a touchdown run by Michael Smith making the score 6 – 0.   The Wildcats regained possession with a stunning quarterback sack by Mario Ferrini and Kyle Matel on top of two big tackles by Matt Forche.

The Wildcats then marched down the field with big runs by Michael Smith, Rob Armiak and Chandon Nelson.  In addition, Tre Cadwell connected twice with Justin Danks during the final drives of the half keeping the score 6 – 0 at the half way point.

During the second half the Wildcats started off with a huge tackle in the Rocks backfield by Jon Mencer.  Then a riled up the Rocks team gained some momentum which led to them scoring two quick touchdowns making the score 14-6 in favor of the Rocks.

The Wildcats fought back on the next possession with runs by Grant Wheeler, Michael Smith, Tre Cadwell, Chandon Nelson and Kyle Matel all behind a strong offensive line of Scott Schramm, Mario Ferrini, Artie Teran, Sparsh Mengi , Kameron Mitchell and Nick Shelar.  The drive ended with an 8 yard Touchdown run by Smith making the score 14-12 with Salem in the lead. 

The Salem kickoff was short and a penalty put the Wildcats on their 21 yard line.  Jon Mencer started the offensive drive with a 5 yard run followed by a 13 yard run by Grant Wheeler.  In the goal line surge the Wildcats fumbled, lineman Kameron Mitchell made a heads up play and recovered the fumble in the end zone for the Wildcat score.  The Wildcats had a successful 2 point conversion making the score 20-14 in favor of the Wildcats.  Salem then scored on the kickoff with their PAT being denied making the score an even 20 – 20 where it ended. 

The Wildcat freshmen take on South Lyon on Thursday,  9/24 at home.
